1. What different types of contact lenses are available?

Bayfields Opticians provides lenses of all types, for all kinds of wear. We can fit you with lenses, no matter what your prescription!

We can fit all our eye care clients with contact lenses, and have a variety of options available which can be worn on overnight, or on a daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, 3-monthly, 6-monthly or annual basis.

We cater to all lifestyles and try to provide the best possible comfort at all times. Our product range includes:

  • Soft lenses
  • GP (gas permeable) lenses
  • Toric lenses
  • Lenses for conventional wear
  • Coloured lenses
  • OrthoK overnight correction lenses
  • Tailor-made lenses

2. Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?

Yes. Contact lenses suitable for those with astigmatism are called toric lenses, and they come in both soft and GP contact lens materials.

GP contact lenses tend to work better for large amounts of astigmatism, because they are custom-fit to your eyes' particular shape; also, their firm material keeps its original shape more when you blink. In addition, moderate amounts of astigmatism may be corrected with a soft contact lens.

3. Can children wear contact lenses?

Yes - there's no reason why young children and teens can't wear contact lenses with the correct care and lens maintenance. As soon as a need for vision correction is identified, contact lenses are a possible option. In fact there are some important benefits for children, including

  • Help to build self-esteem and confidence
  • Enable them to be more active and join in more sports and activities
  • Safer than glasses, which can break and cause injury
  • Can protect vulnerable young eyes with 100% UV protection
  • Provide better peripheral vision than glasses

4. Can I use my spectacles prescription for contact lenses?

No. Prescriptions are often different between spectacles and contact lenses. This is because contact lenses sit directly on the eye, whereas spectacles' lenses are at a 10-12mm distance from the eye (on average). So the majority of the time, prescriptions will differ.

5. Do I need a separate appointment to get contact lenses?

Yes. This is for a number of different reasons:

  • Your Optometrist will need to calculate your contact lenses prescription
  • Because contact lenses are a medical device, they need to be fit properly by a qualified Optometrist.
  • Bayfields' Optometrists carry out lifestyle consultations with their eye care clients. These consultations allow them to recommend what is best for you, based on your lifestyle.
  • Our specialist fittings ensure that you will have safe, correct and clear vision in all situations.

6. Why do I need regular contact lenses appointments?

You will require regular contact lens appointments so that Optometrists can:

check that the lenses are still fitting the wearer's eyes properly.

ensure that their instructions for wearing contact lenses are being followed. If not, a contact lens wearer runs the risk of eye infections or irritation to the eyes.

make sure that the contact lens wearer's vision is still of the highest standard possible.

7. Are contact lenses easy to
put on and take out?

Yes, and it's much easier to get used to doing this than you might think! Some people are nervous about the concept of 'putting something in their eye'. However, we are experienced in helping new contact lens wearers with practical advice and simple techniques. Many clients wonder why they put off wearing contacts for so long!

8. Are contact lenses comfortable to wear?

Most people find contact lenses incredibly comfortable to wear from the outset. With ongoing advances in materials and technology, today's contact lenses are better than they've ever been. Once you get to grips with putting contact lenses on and taking them out there's no reason why they should cause discomfort.

9. What do contact lenses cost?

Bayfields' Optometrists tailor make solutions to best suit each unique lifestyle. With this in mind, contact lenses can cost as little as buying a take-out coffee every week.

10. Do contact lenses offer any UV protection?

Yes, we stock contact lenses which offer up to 98% UV protection to shield your precious eyes from those harmful rays and help safeguard your long-term sight.

11. Can you tell me more about coloured contact lenses?

Soft, coloured contact lenses for daily, monthly and conventional wear are available at Bayfields Opticians.

12. Are contacts good for my eyes?

Millions of people wear contact lenses every day and find them to be a great solution for them. If you follow good practice when applying, removing, and caring for your lenses you will find them to be safe and effective for you.

You will still need to attend regular eye examinations and contact lens reviews to safeguard your sight and ensure long-term eye health.

13. Why should I consider contact lenses?

Contact lenses can provide freedom from glasses. This can be particularly liberating for those who lead active or sporty lifestyles, busy school children, and anyone wanting to change their look or create a whole new image.
