Eye Protection from Ultra Violet Damage.

We are all aware of the dangers of the sun's rays when it comes to our skin, but many of us forget to protect our eyes from those harmful UV rays.

Research has shown that UV rays can cause serious sight-threatening conditions, and children are particularly at risk.

For all of us, long-term exposure to sunlight without the right eye protection increases the risk of a type of cataract and is also linked to pterygia (a growth on the surface of the eye). Sun can burn the eyes in the same way it can the skin, but don't be fooled into thinking you only need to worry when it's hot. Reflected sunlight from snow, water and artificial light from sunbeds, is particularly dangerous.

Another risk to eyes is skin cancer, which can affect the eyelids and area around the eyes. Long-term exposure to the sun can increase this risk.

The good news is there is something you can do to dramatically reduce your risk.

When you are shopping for sunglasses, choose a pair that has one of the following:

  • The 'CE Mark' and British Standard (BS EN 1836:1997)

  • A UV 400 label

  • A statement that the sunglasses offer 100% UV protection

Think about the sides of your eyes, and consider sunglasses with wide or wrap-around arms. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can also help to reduce the amount of UV rays reaching your face and eyes.

UV Protection lenses

Bayfields are passionate about UV protection lenses and the enormous benefits to the care of your eye health.

We fit all our prescription sunglasses with 100% UV protection lenses as standard.

Normal non-prescription sunglasses and normal glasses/spectacles do not always have 100% UV protection. In fact, over half of 'high street' sunglasses fail to meet EU safety standards. See the link below for more information: Daily Mail Article.

Designer Sunglasses

Style is important for your look, so we stock a wide range of celebrity and designer sunglasses for you to have just the 'look' you want.

Photochromic Lenses

Photochromic lenses or transition lenses are lenses that darken on exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Once the UV is removed (for example by walking indoors), the lenses return to their clear state.

Bayfields offer photochromic coating on a range of frames, sports frames and a separate range of Photochromic sunglasses.
