Here's what our clients think of Eye Tests at Bayfields Opticians
Why are regular eye tests important?
Regular eye tests help to detect conditions early
Having regular eye tests, OCT scans, and optomap® imaging is one of the best ways to look after your vision and overall health. An eye test isn’t just about checking if you need glasses - it helps spot early signs of common eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often before you notice any symptoms. An eye test can also sometimes reveal wider health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure, giving you even more reason to keep up with your check-ups.
OCT and optomap® Scans
If you want an even deeper look into your eye health, at Bayfields, we we offer the very best in cutting edge technology with advanced scans as standard, like the OCT eye test and optomap® imaging.
The OCT eye test scan uses light waves to create detailed images of the back of your eye, helping us catch any changes early and monitor any existing conditions over time.
Meanwhile, the optomap® scan gives a much wider view of around 85% of your retina, making it easier to detect things like retinal tears, detachments, or signs of diseases like diabetes and heart problems. These advanced tools mean we can help keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear for years to come.

Eye tests - your questions answered
What is an eye test?
An eye test is a comprehensive check of your vision and eye health carried out by a qualified optometrist. It assesses your ability to see clearly, checks for any changes in your prescription, and screens for early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. At Bayfields, our eye tests include advanced scans like the OCT eye test and optomap® scan for an even more detailed view of your eye health.
Why is an eye test important?
An eye test is important because it helps protect your vision and overall eye health. Many serious eye conditions develop slowly without obvious symptoms, so regular eye exams can catch problems early when they’re easier to treat. Eye tests can also detect signs of other health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
How often should your eyes be tested?
Most people should have an eye test every two years, even if their vision seems fine. However, your optometrist may recommend more frequent testing if you have certain medical conditions, wear glasses or contact lenses, have a family history of eye disease, or are over 60.

Do you offer childrens eye tests?
Yes, at Bayfields we offer children's tests of all ages with an NHS eyesight test. It’s important to check your child’s vision regularly to support their learning and development. Ay Bayfields we offer free eye tests for children under the NHS, plus £19.50 for an OCT scan. We make the experience fun and stress-free for little ones.
Do I need an eye test even though I've had a contact lens check-up?
Yes, a contact lens check-up is not a substitute for a full eye test. A contact lens check-up focuses on the health of your eyes in relation to your lenses, but it doesn’t include a full vision assessment or detailed scans like the OCT eye test or optomap® scan. We recommend having a comprehensive eye test alongside your regular contact lens appointments.
