Who Qualifies for Free NHS Eye Tests?
Checking your NHS eye test eligibility is simple. You're entitled to a free NHS eyesight test at Bayfields Opticians if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You are under 16, or aged 16-18 and in full-time education.
- You are over 60 years old, making you eligible for a free over-60 eye test.
- You have been diagnosed with glaucoma, or a have a close family member with the condition
- You are registered as blind or partially sighted.
You are entitled to a valid NHS Optical Voucher or hold an HC2/HC3 certificate. - You receive certain benefits, such as Income Support, Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, or Pension Graduate Scheme.

If you don't meet the eligibility criteria for a free NHS test, we offer private eye tests starting at £64 depending on the equipment available at the practice. Please contact your nearest Bayfields practice for pricing details and to book your appointment.

How do I get an NHS Optical Voucher?
If you are eligible, your optician will give you an NHS Optical Voucher after your eye test. The value of the voucher will depend on your prescription, and can be used to help with the cost of glasses or contact lenses.If you believe you're eligible but didn't receive a voucher, or have questions, please contact your local practice.
Do you check for eye diseases during an NHS test?
Yes, absolutely. Every eye test at Bayfields includes a full eye health check, as well as screening for conditions like glaucoma and cataracts through an OCT or optomap® scan. We’re not just checking your vision, we’re looking after your eye health.
Can I choose any optician for my NHS eyesight test?
Yes, you have the freedom to choose your optician. As long as the practice accepts NHS appointments, you can book your test there. We are proud to be an NHS-approved provider and welcome all eligible patients at our Bayfields practices.
