What Is An optomap® Retinal Scan?
An optomap® retinal scan (sometimes called optomap® retinal imaging) is an advanced, ultra-widefield eye test that captures a detailed digital image of the back of your eye. It captures around 85% of your retina in just a second, compared to the small area seen with traditional retinal photographs.
Nothing touches your eyes. There are no drops, no bright lights and no discomfort - simply a quick flash, like having your photo taken. Because we can see so much more of your retina, we’re able to detect early signs of both eye conditions and general health issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Who Should Have An optomap® Retinal Exam?
An optomap® eye exam is suitable for almost everyone, and it’s especially helpful if you:
-
Want the most comprehensive view of your eye health
-
Are over 40
-
Have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart conditions
-
Have a family history of retinal disease, glaucoma or macular degeneration
-
Experience flashes, floaters or sudden changes in vision
-
Would like extra reassurance between routine eye tests
Whether you’re new to eye care or simply want a deeper picture of your health, an optomap® retinal scan is a powerful place to start.
What Does optomap® Detect?
Your retina can reveal a lot about your health. With its wider view, optomap® helps us detect a range of eye health conditions including:
- Retinal tears and detachments
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Hypertensive retinopathy (linked to high blood pressure)
- Signs associated with heart problems or vascular changes
- Macular degeneration
- Retinal moles or freckles (choroidal nevi)
- Eye strokes (retinal vein or artery occlusion)
- Inflammation or infection affecting the retina
This wider view allows us to protect your vision more effectively, and act earlier when something needs attention.

optomap® or OCT: Which Should You Choose?
optomap® and OCT scans show different details, and both can be incredibly useful.
optomap® - Gives an ultra-wide image of the surface of your retina. It’s ideal for spotting early signs of tears, diabetic changes or blood vessel issues linked to heart health.
OCT - Shows a 3D cross-section of the deeper retinal layers, revealing subtle changes beneath the surface.
Both Scans Together - They provide one of the most complete assessments of your eye health. Some Bayfields practices offer both scans with Our Ultimate Eye Test.
Benefits of an optomap® Scan
- A wider, clearer view of your retina - Shows around 85% of the retina in one image, far more than standard eye tests.
- Early detection for better outcomes - Helps us identify changes linked to retinal conditions and wider health issues sooner.
- Peace of mind - You’ll see your retinal images too, so you can understand your own eye health more clearly.

optomap® Scan FAQs
Is optomap® safe for children?
Yes. It uses light rather than contact equipment, so it’s ideal for children and helps us monitor their eye health as they grow.
What is the difference between OCT and optomap®?
optomap® shows a wide image of your retina, while OCT gives a deeper 3D view of the retinal layers. optomap® helps us spot changes across a large area; OCT helps us see fine detail beneath the surface. Together, they offer a fuller picture of your eye health.
Does an optomap® scan hurt?
No, it’s completely painless. A flash of light takes the image, and nothing touches your eye.
How much does an optomap® scan cost at Bayfields?
An optomap® scan is included with our Advanced Eye Test, which is available in selected Bayfields practices. Our Ultimate Eye Test costs £77 for private clients, and £24.50 for children as an optional upgrade. We provide scan(s) as standard in all our eye tests, including NHS appointments. NHS clients pay £49 plus their NHS voucher, which covers the cost of the eye test.
How long does an eye test and optomap® scan take?
All eye tests at Bayfields takes at least 40 minutes, giving plenty of time for your scan and for your optometrist to explain your results.
Can I have an optomap® scan if I have cataracts?
Yes. Cataracts may slightly reduce image clarity, but the scan is still very helpful for assessing your retina.
Is optomap® worth it?
optomap® is worth it if you want a clearer, wider view of your retinal health. It captures up to 85% of the retina, allowing earlier detection of eye and general health conditions, which is why we include scans as standard in all eye tests at Bayfields.
